Richard Flanagan's 2014 novel The Narrow Road to the Deep North, winner of the Man Booker Prize, looks closely at how the perils of love and war shape the life of one man. 

Before Dorrigo Evans leaves Australia to fight in World War II, he develops a connection with his uncle's wife that is strong enough to pull at him even after he is captured and, as a Japanese POW, forced to endure grueling conditions as he is made to work on the Burma Railway.
