Kicking off the new school year with an orientation at Georgetown Library on September 12 at 1:30 p.m., the Bridging the Gap tutoring program is off and running again with a dozen tutors from both Burleith and the Virginia area. This is the fifth year that the volunteer program, founded by Burleith's Angela Iovino in coordination with Garfield Elementary School, will offer individual tutoring once a week to as many as 35 students, grades K-5, in reading and language skills.
For the first time since its inception BTG will be tutoring Wednesday mornings to insure having the greatest impact and reaching as many students as possible. Tutors familiar with the Lexia Program, a sequential, phonics-based approach to language, will continue to reinforce classroom lessons and build the students’ confidence and excitement about reading.
If you are interested in learning more about the program or becoming a tutor yourself, please contact newly appointed program coordinators Sara Adams and Alex Frederick.
