Happenings at Hardy
/By Triniti, Arina, and Zarina
Last month Hardy Middle School had a special presentation to celebrate Ukrainian food day. DCPS has four international food days every year. Hardy’s partnership with the Ukrainian Embassy made this celebration of the divine culture of Ukraine possible and also memorable.
Ukrainian Ambassador Olexander Motsyk spoke during this historic event. Patricia Elwood, from the mayor’s Office of Protocol and International Affairs, shared Mayor Muriel Bowser’s proclamation declaring January 29, 2015, Ukrainian Food Day for all of DC. The school cafeteria served an authentic Ukrainian meal for breakfast and lunch. During lunch, students were served chicken breast with cheese and tomato, mashed potatoes, pickled beets, and a roll.
Special guests performed to enrich us in this beautiful culture, including Gerdan, a Ukrainian musical duo. Students learned about the various folk instruments that originated in Ukraine. Also, our choir performed "Carol of the Bells," a Ukrainian carol.
Ukrainian Food Day was an amazing event, and we hope that all DC schools have the opportunity to experience this unique cultural celebration.
